5 Things I can’t live without in my pro MUA kit

During my first year of business, I learned a whole lot about what’s necessary in my travel kit. While I had to learn the hard way, my hope is to help other makeup artists in the beginning of their journey, and share some of the products I can’t live without in my pro kit.

First and foremost, as a Bridal makeup artist, often times my clients will be outdoors for extended periods of time. For this reason, moisturizer with SPF is an absolute must for makeup artists. This way I can hydrate my clients’ skin while protecting their skin from sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles.

The next essential product on my list is primer. Ultimately primer acts as an additional layer of adhesion for the next steps in the beauty process.- I.e foundation. One tip I can share, however, is that not all primers work with all products or skin types. For example. some product will be just pushed around and not adhere to the skin properly, so it’s important you understand how your products work together.

Not to mention, a lot of the time primers can be used to help achieve a mattified look as well, so consider what it is your client is looking for. Are they wanting a matte finish, or a dewy finish?

The third must-have product on my list is a spatula and mixing tray. This is truly a game changer for efficiency and color matching foundation for a range of skin tones. I use this tray to mix different colors to fine tune the foundation, concealer, and contour for each of my clients. By doing this I am providing the closest match to their skin, and and can easily mix their concealer, and contour on the same tray helping to keep the beauty process move right along. This has literally saved me from unsightly lines, and time!!! I highly recommend taking a course in color matching, color theory, and mixing foundations if you have not already so you can best suit your bridal clients.

The fourth must have is something I learned only recently! Previously, I had been showing up to the venues with a table and tablecloth to lay beneath my cosmetics, but this became such a hassle. After every group of beauty clients, I would have to wash the tablecloth because it will house bacteria from brushes, products, or anything lingering in the air. I was watching a makeup tutorial and the artist was using dentist bibs to lay underneath product. GENIUS. By utilizing something disposable under my beauty products, the cleaning and disinfecting process between clients and groups, is so much easier.

The final must have is my disposables kit, this includes mascara or eyebrow spoolies, eyeliner brushes, lip brushes, and my clips. If you’re new to the beauty world you may not know this, but our eyes carry a lot of bacteria and by using the same mascara spoolie for every client, without disinfecting, you can spread things like conjunctivitis, stye infections, and you could even cause a break out or rash. As a makeup artist, that is a HUGE no-no, especially for bridal clients. As we prepare them for the biggest day of their lives we want to ensure, as part of their beauty team, that we are doing everything in our power to provide hygienic services.
